Leading others on extended wilderness walks is both a challenging and rewarding job, perhaps a career. Read widely, talk to other guides, ask questions of us if you are considering applying. We employ designated tour leaders/ guides and assistant guides as well as casual drivers, food droppers and base staff. Positions are seasonal with the main focus between October and April, usually with a period in mid-winter available, on demand. That said, we often have tours departing each week or two over this main period and we pay above award including overtime rates for the longer days, by agreement. We can offer on-the-job training for enthusiastic assistant guides so don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The following are the sorts of skills and qualifications we look for:

To assist (or lead) you will need these qualifications:

  • Be over eighteen years of age
  • Senior (LII) First Aid or ability to obtain/ update before engagement.
  • Bushwalking and camping experience (preferably with experience on Tasmanian walking tracks).
  • Ability to relate to people from a wide range of backgrounds in a friendly, professional manner.
  • The physical ability to carry  necessary food and equipment (usually means a pack weight of 18-24kg total, we’re always working on lighter ideas), and work extended/overtime hours. All with a smile, in sometimes challenging circumstances while on remote tours.

Preferably, in progressing to leading tours, you may also have or (in due course) be intending to obtain:

  • Advanced outdoor experience and skills/ walking or guiding experience on our tour listed tracks, including The Overland Track.
  • Advanced knowledge of Tasmania’s natural environment.
  • Catering and cooking skills including safe food handling qualification
  • Public vehicle licence endorsements
  • Remote area or other advanced first aid qualifications
  • Knowledge of office procedures and basic computer skills
